MiG-29 Down On Test Flight, Two Fatally Injured

Russian Air Force Grounds The Fleet Pending Investigation

A MiG-29 went down last Thursday while on a training flight in southern Russia, prompting the Russian Air Force to ground its fleet of the planes.

Both pilots, said to be experienced with the airplane, were fatally injured in the accident. The aircraft had been slated for delivery under contract to India for deployment next year on a Russian-built aircraft carrier, according the French news service AFP.

Flight operations for the MiG-29 fleet have been suspended pending an investigation. The accident occurred in the Astrakhan region near the town of Akhtubinsk, according to the Russian defense ministry.
