Russian Warbird Down

Three Killed

It may have been the last of its kind -- a Russian warbird which went down near Moscow Saturday, killing three of the five people on board.

Itar-Tass reports no one on the ground was hurt when the Lusinov Li-2 (file photo of type, above) crashed about 30 miles south of the Russian capital.

The Li-2 was a Douglas DC-3 licensed to the Soviet Union during World War II. The Soviets built thousands of them, using them as both troop transports and medium bombers against the Nazis.

In Saturday's accident, officials told Russia's Channel One that the aircraft was flying from Myachikovo airfield to Kaluga when it started losing altitude. They said the pilot tried to avoid the urban area, but clipped the roof of a house and crashed.

The Li-2 was owned by a group of warbird enthusiasts based at Myachikovo and is thought to have been the last of its kind. There are unconfirmed reports that the aircraft, along with one other, was to be on static display at Oshkosh next month.
