Many Fly To Smaller Airports, Check-In Online
According to a quarterly report by
online travel services provider Orbitz.com, airline passengers are
taking more steps than ever to combat expected hassles at the
airport. They're checking in from home, booking flights that depart
in the early morning or late at night, and checking more
luggage.
Ipsos Public Affairs conducted the phone survey for Orbitz in
September, reports The Associated Press. The company surveyed 838
consumers who traveled in the past year.
The Traveler Update Report notes one-third of those surveyed
opted for smaller regional airports over larger, more congested
hubs, in an effort to avoid delays. Nearly 70 percent said they now
leave for the airport earlier than they used to, for fear of
missing their flight due to long lines at ticketing or
security.
As travelers become more proactive, their opinion of the
check-in experience has become more positive. A full 60 percent of
those surveyed check in for their flight online before arriving at
the airport, and two-thirds say the check-in process has become a
better experience because of it.
On the flip side, passengers' opinion of airport security has
declined. Forty-two percent of those surveyed by Orbitz said
getting through airport security is even worse now, that it was
last year -- despite apparent awareness of current security
regulations. Many passengers are checking more luggage, to avoid
protracted screening of carry-on bags.
Higher gas prices and other costs are also having an impact on
travel habits. Thirty-five percent of travelers say they're renting
smaller cars at their destinations than before due to gas prices,
and 31 percent say they now stay at less-expensive hotels.
