Ignorance Leads to Deportation

Culture Clash at ORD

The Indian Express reports that, early this month at O'Hare International Airport, an India-born Canadian got her passport cancelled, and was forced to fly to India, because of a cultural SNAFU on the part of US Immigration.

Berna Cruz was born in Thiruvananthapuram, India, and is a Christian. Her last name, according to Immigration, should have been, Singh. Immigration didn't like her Portuguese name, and called her, 'clever,' in taking up that different name. She protested that she didn't 'take up' any name -- her name is Cruz. The Indian paper quoted her as saying, "I was trying to explain to them, but they did not want to listen to anything, they did not want to see anything."

Apparently, they didn't listen.

Ms. Cruz got shipped, against her will and with a cancelled passport, to India. "It was total abuse," she told the paper. Then she added, "I want to see them (officers responsible) punished."
