Bombardier/Indy To Lay Off 90

Service Center To Close October 1

Even with indications that the aviation sector is picking up, Bombardier says it's closing its service center in Indianapolis (IN) on October 1st. The announcement means about 90 workers -- many of them highly-skilled -- will get their walking papers soon, according to the Indianapolis Star.

Workers started getting the word Tuesday, according to Bombardier Aircraft Services spokesman Stephen Phillips.

"It basically comes as a result of a study we did of our entire service center network," Phillips told the Star. "We determined that we had more capacity in the system than we needed."

The company's facility at Indianapolis International Airport refits and refurbishes mostly Lear and Challenger corporate jets. It acquired the plant when it absorbed AMR Combs in 1995.

As for the workers, the Star reports Bombardier promises to help find them jobs at its other eight service centers.
