Airman's Remains Possibly Found

Fishermen Find Clothing With A Namtag

An Air Force Reservist may be finally going home... a decade late.

A fishing trawler off the California coast Tuesday recovered human remains inside a black tee-shirt with the name Leonard on the tag. Jonathan Leonard was one of the reservists aboard an HC-130P, a rescue variant of the aircraft shown above, that crashed off Cape Mendocino on November 22 1996.

Only one person survived the accident -- 10 others, including Leonard, perished.

Humboldt County Coroner Frank Jager told the Associated Press the remains were in relatively good condition for having been on the sea floor for so long, which should aid in identifying the victim.

The Hercules crashed into the sea on its way to North Island Naval Air Station in San Diego. The crew, assigned to the Air Force Reserve's 939th Rescue Wing at Portland International, had departed their home base to conduct an over-water training mission shortly before all four engines flamed out.

According to globalsecurity.com, the Air Force investigation determined fuel starvation as the cause of the multiple engine failure, but what caused the fuel starvation remains a mystery.
