Airborne 10.01.18: F-35 Down, Airshow Pilot Julie Clark, Boeing Wins T-X

Also: Airport Workers, NVG SAFO, WAI Receives Grant, TSA Perimeter Security Program

Last week was both good and bad for the F-35 program. An F-35B went down near MCAS Beaufort in South Carolina, though local authorities quickly confirmed that, "The pilot from the military plane crash safely ejected..."

Beaufort is the home of Marine Fighter Attack Training Squadron 501, where training for new F-35 pilots is conducted. Journalists often over-use the word ‘iconic’ -- but the career of airshow pilot Julie Clark certainly deserves that description... especially now that we know that Ms. Clark is heading into her last year on the airshow circuit with her decision to retire next year. Her efforts have been featured by ANN and Aero-TV on countless occasions, but the depth and breadth of her career is truly hard to chronicle... while keeping mind that Julie is still flying the same, beautifully restored Beechcraft T-34 Mentor… After a hard-fought competition, US Air Force pilots will soon train for combat with T-X jets and simulators from Boeing. “[This] announcement is the culmination of years of unwavering focus by the Boeing and Saab team,” said Leanne Caret, president and CEO, Boeing Defense, Space & Security. Boeing and its risk-sharing partner Saab designed, developed, and flight tested the all-new, purpose-built jets. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
