Airborne-Unmanned 04.30.19: UAV Kidney Transport, Sprayer Drone, NASC TigerShark

Also: Avanti Unmanned Systems, DeltaHawk, Autonymous PAL-V eVTOL Flying Car, FlytGCS

An interesting bit of history occurred recently as an unmanned vehicle transported a human kidney that was eventually transplanted into a human being.

The milestone took place last week, as the organ was delivered to a hospital via a drone and subsequently transplanted into a University of Maryland Medical Center patient -- apparently, the first time such an event has occurred. Transplant surgeon Dr. Joseph Scalea, was reportedly inspired to conduct such an attempt due to the immense costs and issues currently incurred in organ transportation, over the course of several years of study. A drone manufacturer is seeking an FAA waiver for operation of an unmanned aircraft weighing more than 55 pounds, the maximum allowed under part 107 rules. Aerones, explains that the aircraft are designed for use as water sprayers for such applications as firefighting and building cleaning. The company plans to offer services using the drones rather than selling them to others, according to a report from Inside Unmanned Systems. Navmar Applied Sciences has received a Special Airworthiness Certification in the Experimental Category from the FAA for two of its NASC TigerShark-XP aircraft, the N1740X and N1750X. The TigerShark-XP is a variant of the US Navy RQ-23A Group III Unmanned Aircraft System. The RQ-23A saw service in both Iraq and Afghanistan with over 100,000 flight hours. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!
