Proposed Project Is 12 To 13 Miles From The Bismarck Airport
A wind farm project proposed for a location 15 miles southeast of Bismarck, ND is being evaluated for potential impacts on airport operations at Bismarck Municipal Airport (KBIS).
The Bismarck Tribune reports that the wind farm developers have reduced the height of some of the turbines planned for the project to accommodate concerns expressed by pilots who use the airport. Chicago-based Pure New Energy USA says it has coordinated with the FAA and the airport during its planning process, which has led to the adjustments.
After those adjustment were made, the FAA determined that there would be no substantial impact on air navigation caused by the wind farm, provided that the turbines are properly lighted and marked. But Bismarck Airport Director Greg Haug said that he still has questions about possible interference with airport surveillance radar.
The proposed project is for between 65 and 75 wind turbines on 15,000 acres in southern Burleigh County that would produce 250 megawatts of electricity. The turbines would be between 450 and 570 feet tall.
Proponents cite economic benefits for the county from the project, while opponents, apart from the airport concerns, say it will be unsightly. Bismarck Mayor Steve Bakken, who also serves on the Bismarck Planning Commission, said that no matter which way the vote goes, there will likely be an appeal.
A planning commission meeting was set for Wednesday. The Burleigh County Commission is also expected to hold a public hearing on the project.
