Classic Aero-TV: Electroair Engine Upgrades--More Power, Efficiency, Reliability

From 2015 (YouTube Version): The Benefits Of Electronic Ignition Technologies Are Significant... and Plentiful

Here’s a comment commonly heard from general aviation pilots and mechanics; “If cars, motorcycles, and snowmobiles can be produced with electronic ignition systems, why are our aircraft stuck with what looks like a 1937 Ford tractor magneto?”

Some newer aircraft engines are being produced with electronic ignition systems but for most of us, we simply have to live in the past. Well, now things are changing.

While at Sun ‘n Fun 2015, ANN News Editor, Tom Patton, stopped to talk with Mike Kobylik, the president of Electroair. They have entered the business of retrofitting their electronic ignition system to the big-bore Continental engines and numerous other engines.

Kobylik says that their electronic system provides a high-energy spark source that results in a number of aircraft performance improvements. Just to name a few, how about a 10 to 15 percent fuel efficiency improvement, more horsepower, smoother operation, and reduce maintenance. With the electronic system variable timing is achieved, and the system adjusts to engine performance by measuring manifold pressure.

In this video you’ll see a complete outline of what the system does, how it works, what it costs, and installation considerations. Whether or not you’re considering changing to an electronic ignition system, there’s lots of interesting details in this video. And for those of you flying aircraft certified as experimental, Electroair has systems for you as well.
