Airborne 04.01.20: April 1st Episode, Bloomberg-NASA, Sanders-BizAv, Space Force

Billionaire Michael Bloomberg has announced that he will start his own commercial space company in an effort to spend the money he has earmarked for his Presidential campaign.

But rather than start from scratch, he is making a bid for NASA. Bloomberg joins a small but growing club of billionaires who have made their fortune in the tech industry and then started launching rockets into space. But rather than build something from the ground up, Bloomberg is exploring what it would take to buy NASA from the U.S. Government. The NBAA has announced that Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has been added to the roster of business aviation boosters as part of its “No Plane, No Gain” campaign. Sanders, a self-proclaimed democratic socialist, has made extensive use of corporate jets in his run for President, using up to three Gulfstream jets to ferry himself and his entourage between campaign events, and that caught the attention of NBAA president and CEO Ed Bolen. “We may disagree on a lot of issues, but anybody who gets the value of private jets for business use deserves to be considered,” Bolen said. “We reached out to the Sanders campaign, and while they were initially leery of the idea because of the apparent conflict between socialism and corporate airplanes, Sanders himself was very receptive to the idea.” When the U.S. Space Force was announced, the Internet blew up over the similarities between the new logo and the Starfleet emblem seen in every episode of Star Trek. And now, Rod Roddenberry says he wants his cut. Roddenberry filed a lawsuit in federal court claiming that the Space Force logo “clearly is a direct copy of the ‘Starfleet’ logo that was created for the Star Trek franchise,” according to court documents. The suit seeks an undisclosed amount from the federal government for use of the image under copyright law. “They could have just called it “Starfleet”, Roddenberry said. “I mean it’s so obvious. If they had called and asked, I probably would have said ‘yes’ and been flattered. But since they just kinda stole it, I want a piece of the action.” All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
