Say It Ain't So! Virginia Suspends Airport Awards Program

Ran Out Of Prizes, No Money For More

One of the most exciting programs anywhere for general aviation pilots is Virginia's Aviation Ambassadors Awards. ANN reported just a few days ago about how pilots documenting visits to all 66 public use airports in the Commonwealth of Virgina, and selected aviation museums and safety seminars, could earn prizes including a nice leather flight jacket.

We regret that we must now tell you that after awarding 137 of the jackets, Virginia has run out of prizes, and also run out of money to buy any more.

Spokeswoman Cherry Evans stresses pilots can still obtain the passport-style booklets used to collect the stamps documenting their visits... but for now, they'll have to wait to redeem them for the prizes.

The highly successful program was established in 2005 to encourage pilots and the general public to visit Virginia’s 66 public use airports, attend pilot safety seminars, and visit aviation related museums. At each location or event, participants receive a stamp in an Aviation Passport.

The program, by the way, is not limited to Virgina residents. Pilots from at least two other states have won jackets.
