Aero-TV: Arlington Aglow – Balloonists Light Up the Night

Larry Simburger Introduces One of Arlington’s Most Acclaimed Attractions

This July, the Arlington Fly-In celebrated its 41st year. Now the nation’s third largest general aviation event, the Fly-In continues to attract over 50,000 aviation enthusiasts annually. Spirited volunteers help transform the Arlington Municipal Airport for over 1,000 attending aircraft, as well as for the exciting aviation performances exhibited each year.

One event in particular, the Hot Air Balloon Night Glow, continues to enliven attending crowds with its brilliant show. On Saturday evening of the Fly-In, visitors can watch in wonderment as the hot air balloons put on a dazzling display against the night sky.

This year, five hot air balloons were in attendance as part of the annual event.

Aero-TV sat down with Larry Simburger, Director of Balloon Operations for the Arlington Fly-In, to discuss what makes this particular Night Glow special for attendees and balloonists alike. Simburger is internationally renown in the field, having been awarded the Mongolfier Ballooning Diploma in 2002.

He earned this lifetime achievement, along with his friend Vic Johnson, for the first successful hot air balloon crossing of Mount Rainier.
