Lead Mechanic On Fatal Helios Flight Fears For His Safety

Refuses To Return To Cyprus For Questioning

A British mechanic who cleared an ill-fated Helios Airways 737-200 for take-off on its final flight has refused to return to Cyprus for questioning, saying he's afraid for his life.

"He is refusing to come to Cyprus for safety reasons," Cypriot Transport Minister Harris Thrassou told Reuters.

As ANN reported extensively, the Helios flight, bound from Larnaca, Cyprus, to Prague with 121 people on board crashed near Athens August 14th. All on board were lost. It was considered the worst air disaster in Greek and Cypriot history.

The mechanic in question was one of three who serviced the aircraft prior to its final departure. There was no immediate indication why he left Cyprus. Government officials weren't sure if his contract had been terminated or had simply run out. Helios executives wouldn't comment.

So Greek and Cypriot authoritites investigating the mishap are headed for London where they'll question the unidentified mechanic.

"He is not refusing to testify. Arrangements are being made for the Greek team to go to London to get a statement," Thrassou said.
