Airborne 06.01.16: End Of The Legacy, Enstrom TH-180, XCOR Setbacks

For those who are involved in the homebuilt airplane movement, this announcement from Lancair closes a chapter with a popular kit-built airplane.

Lancair has announced that it will no longer be offering "Legacy" kits after 15 years of production. In a post on the company's website, Lancair said that the final kit will be a retractable Lancair Legacy "Reno Race Version." According to Lancair, Closing down the Legacy production line was a "tough but necessary decision." Enstrom helicopter has now continue flight testing of their TH-180 helicopter that is intended for the training market. The testing is being resumed with the second prototype aircraft. In February of this year, the first prototype TH-180 suffered significant damage when a mechanical problem forced the aircraft down with no injuries to the pilot or persons on the ground. The first flight of the second prototype took to the air under control of Enstrom test pilot and Senior Technical Fellow, William Taylor. While the Lynx suborbital spaceplane was at one time the top priority for XCOR, they have now suspended work on the Lynx spacecraft and idled many of its employees who were working on the spaceplane project. Although much of the spacecraft had been assembled, only one wing has been fabricated, and the company reportedly does not have the necessary capital to manufacture the second wing. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
