UAV Maker DJI Will Disable All Flights Near White House

Aircraft Will Not Operate Within 15 Miles Of Downtown D.C.

After one of its UAVs found itself broken on the White House grounds early Monday, DJI said it is releasing a "mandatory update" to its operating systems in the next few days that will disable aircraft that attempt to fly within a 15.5 mile radius of downtown Washington, D.C.

The software update would also automatically disable flights around more than 10,000 airports around the country, according to a report from Time online.  And should operators choose not to install the update, they'll miss out on features released in the future.

DJI Spokesman Michael Perry said the company is pushing the update out earlier than originally planned in order to "lead in encouraging responsible flight. With the unmanned aerial systems community growing on a daily basis, we feel it is important to provide pilots additional tools to help them fly safely and responsibly.”
