EAA AirVenture can be the place to find out about new technology that is being tested on experimental airplanes. At AirVenture 2016, ANN News Editor Tom Patton set out to talk with the folks at LAM Aviation to discuss their new technology related to their patented system for improving airplane handling, performance, and resistance to spins.
Tom talked with the chief engineer of LAM Aviation, Greg Cole who said their new aerodynamic technology allows a wing to be smaller, while producing more lift and less drag. He explains that in finding these solutions, they also improved handling characteristics at low speeds and improved the aircraft spin resistance capabilities.
As you watch the video, it clearly shows how a standard Columbia Volant single-engine airplane is fitted with a different wing that includes an active control system that automatically reacts to maintain a safe angle of attack.
Cole’s detailed description of the system is well covered in this video, and you’ll also see the airplane in flight with the system in operation. The video goes on to talk about how this could be applied to existing aircraft, and it provides a good look at modern aerodynamic technology.
