UK Ambassador To Afghanistan Escapes Burning C-130

Plane Caught Fire On Landing; Burst Tire To Blame

The new British ambassador to Afghanistan had a close call earlier this week, when the military C-130 transport plane he was on caught fire as it was landing at an airstrip in Helmand province.

The Guardian reports Stephen Evans (right) -- who was named ambassador just last month -- was able to escape, uninjured, along with the rest of his team as the aircraft burst into flames.

Military officials said one of the plane's tires burst when the plane landed, sending debris into one of the plane's four turboprop engines. Hostile fire is not suspected in the incident.

No one was injured in the fire. Evans was visiting the area to speak with British troops handling reconstruction efforts there.

This isn't the first close call for Evans. Before being named his country's ambassador to Afghanistan, he was the British High Commissioner in Sri Lanka... and was in the country when a devastating tsunami struck the area on December 26, 2004.
