Turkish Airliner Slides Over A Cliff In Northern Turkey

All Passengers And Crew Safe After Runway Excursion

A Pegasus Airlines 737-800 was involved in a runway excursion on Sunday and slid off a cliff, leaving it stuck in the mud a few feet above the Black Sea.

Sky News reports that the airplane overshot the runway and went over the edge, becoming stuck in the mud before impacting the water at the base of the cliff. There were 162 passengers and crew on board the airplane, and all were evacuated safely.

The flight was arriving at Trabzon Airport from the Turkish capital of Ankara when the incident occurred. It is not known why the airplane veered off the runway.

The airport was reportedly closed for several hours while the passengers and crew were evacuated from the plane. An investigation has been initiated, according to local governor Yucel Yavuz.
