Fire Destroys 14 Hangar Bays, Over A Dozen Planes At Camas, WA Airport

No Clues Yet As To The Cause Of The Blaze

A fire broke out in a hangar at Grove Field (1W1) airport in Camas, WA Monday night that quickly spread and destroyed 14 hangar bays and the airplanes inside them, according to a report from television station KPTV.

More than a dozen airplanes were destroyed in the two-alarm fire, according to airport officials. The initial fire broke out about 10:30 pm local time, and caused a fuel tank on one of the airplanes to explode, which set off a chain reaction with the other aircraft parked in the hangar.

The Columbian newspaper reports that Port of Camas-Washougal executive director David Ripp said no one was inside the E hangar when the fire broke out.

There are some 70 hangar bays leased mainly to GA pilots at the airport. Officials said each is inspected annually, and all were up to code at their most recent inspection.
