TSA Allows Box Cutters Through JFK Security

Passenger Made It To The Airplane With Three In His Carry-On Luggage

A passenger boarding an international flight at JFK airport apparently made it all the way to the airplane with three box cutters in his carry-on luggage, which will mean disciplinary action for two TSA agents and a supervisor.

The incident grounded the Dominican Republic-bound JetBlue aircraft for several hours while authorities sorted it out.

The New York Post reports that the passenger, Eusebio Peraltalajara of Jersey City, was not discovered until a flight attendant asked him to stow his carry-on in the overhead bin. As he did so, the box cutters fell out of the bag. The FA, Fausto Penaloda, grabbed the contraband and alerted the flight deck crew.

At the end of the day, Peraltalajara was not charged with any crime. He explained that he used the box cutters in his job, and forgot that they were in his bag. But that didn't come after a full bomb sweep of the airplane and about a three hour delay. TSA spokesperson Ann Davis said the airplane and its passengers were never in any danger.

But it is bad news for the screeners who missed the box cutters, and their supervisor. Davis said they will "all be disciplined, and undergo remedial training."
