3 Seek to Develop UAV Weather Solution in ND

GrandSky, TruWeather And MeteoMatics Push For UAV Weather In North Dakota

GrandSky is a party to two multi-year contracts aimed at developing a weather collection and forecasting system for Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS) operations. As is the case with most outdoor activities, weather represents one of the greatest risks, and it is more pronounced with small UAS that are no match for the harshness of nature. For UAS’, the risk is even greater for operations Beyond Visual Line Of Sight (BVLOS).

With TruWeather Solutions, GrandSky hopes to capitalize on their expertise in translating real-time and predictive micro-weather, and subsequently contributing to the forecasting service to operationalize resource scheduling, planning, and assure the successful outcome of a mission.

GrandSky hopes to use TruWeather Solutions’ data with its ‘Meteodrone’ (mobile micro weather station) to gain higher-quality real-time weather up to around 17,000ft above ground, essentially going beyond what is traditionally available from weather sensing radar. MeteoMatics’ part in this solution is the integration of the Meteodrone and TruWeather data to generate analytics and run the North Dakota forecast model.

We’re told that while traditional forecasting masks gaps in weather by forecasting what ‘might’ be there, TruWeather’s constellation of sensors close to weather measurement gaps provides more accurate information. The immediate goal is to provide modeling and forecast of weather information across North Dakota, not just for small and large UAS’s but also electric vertical takeoff and landing eVTOL.

Meteomatics has a long history of providing accurate weather and climate data as well as application programming interface (APIs’) to weather shops and other interested parties globally. TruWeather solutions, perhaps best known for its TruFlite V360 weather analytics platform, optimizes low and mod-airspace operations by translating micro-weather into simple go or no-go insights.
