Two Planes Begin Takeoff Rolls At The Same Time

Airplanes On Intersecting Runways At Midway Airport

A Southwest flight and a Delta flight reportedly began their takeoff rolls on intersecting runways at the same time last Tuesday evening at Chicago's Midway Airport.

The southwest flight was departing for Tulsa, OK, while the Delta flight was en route to Atlanta, according to a report from WBBM-TV.

The FAA said in a statement that the incident occurred at about 7:40 p.m. local time. Preliminary information shows that the Southwest flight had been cleared for takeoff on Runway 31-Center. The Delta flight on Runway 4-Right also started rolling, but had not been given clearance, according to the FAA. The controller told the Delta flight to stop immediately. The Southwest pilot also chose to abort the takeoff.

The airplanes both stopped about 2,000 feet short of the intersection, according to the report.

Both flight eventually continued to their respective destinations ... after a lot of paperwork was filled out. Delta said in a statement that it is cooperating with the FAA in its investigation.
