Russian Airliner Down In Petrozavodsk, 44 Fatally Injured

Pilot Was Reportedly Trying To Land In Heavy Fog

A RusAir Tu-134 airliner has reportedly gone down on approach to Petrozavodsk airport in northwest Russia near midnight local time Monday, fatally injuring 44 people on board. Eight people are said to have survived the accident, but were seriously injured.

Multiple media sources including the New York Daily News report that the aging airliner impacted the ground short of the runway after clipping some trees while attempting to land in heavy fog. The Russian federal transportation agency said there was no indication of any problems with the aircraft prior to the accident.

RusAir said the airplane was "in good working order." The air traffic controller responsible for the plane told the Russian news website lifenews.ru that visibility was just above minimums at the time of the accident.
