Airborne 08.19.19: Blue Angel Incident, Tecnam P2012, New Orleans Tragedy

Also: VMS Eve Arrives 'Home', Bell 407GXi IFR Cert, Advanced G550 Course, Fake Mechanic

Somewhere, there are two US Navy Blue Angel pilots who possess some very LUCKY rabbit's feet.

The US Navy has confirmed that a Wednesday practice flight went awry when two Blue Angel F/A-18s came into contact with each other... thankfully, without any serious damage or injury. Blue Angel Spokesperson, Lt. Michelle Tucker, described the incident on behalf of Rear Admiral Daniel Dwyer, chief of naval air training... "The No. 3 canopy made momentary contact with the underside of No. 1's outer wing during the Diamond 360 maneuver," she noted. Tecnam has announced that the FAA has awarded a full Type Certificate to the P2012 Traveller with the number A00076CE under Part 23 of the Federal Aviation Regulations. Tecnam is now on track to commence deliveries, beginning with the first 20 of the one hundred P2012 Travellers awaited by Cape Air in Massachusetts. The first few P2012 Travellers, already produced and ready to go, will fly from Capua to the Cape Air base in Hyannis, MA in the upcoming weeks. Franklin JP Augustus, one of the few African American Airshow pilots in the world, as well as being heavily involved in the local chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen, went down in his 1983 Pitts S-2B about a half mile from New Orleans Lakefront Airport at approximately 1500 local time. He was giving an aerobatic ride to prominent local TV Reporter, Nancy Parker, when the aircraft went down. Augustus radioed a short warning about aircraft trouble, prior to impact, but little else is yet known about the accident, other than the fact that Augustus noted that he would be using the local aerobatic practice area. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
