Big Bucks For A Busy Airport

JFK Slated For Nearly $7 Million For Taxiway Improvements

The FAA has awarded a grant of almost $7 million for improvements to several taxiways at JFK International Airport. Taxiways S, SC SD and SR will benefit from the funding.

The money will be used for projects like pavement rehabilitation, according to the Queens Courier. The FAA, made an award to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey of a total of $6,910,152 for the taxiway improvements.

Senator Charles Schumer (D-NY) said in a written statement that flight delays in the New York City area last year cost an estimated $4.9 billion in lost productivity, cancelled vacations, increased fuel costs and other economic impacts. “These taxiway improvements will increase safety and obliterate many of the frustrating delays that we have all experienced at New York City’s largest airport," the statement said. "These funds will greatly improve traveling for New Yorkers and travelers across the world.”

Schumer said people flying into and out of New York airports bear the brunt of an estimated $41 billion air traffic delays cost the U.S. economy last year because New York City has the worst delays in the nation, and city airports are the business intersection of the country.
