Is China Building An Aircraft Carrier?

Taiwan Says Photos Don't Lie

China's central government is denying rumors coming from Taiwan that the country has bought and is currently rebuilding an old Russian aircraft carrier.

Taiwanese media sources showed two photos they say back up claims by that nation's government that China has, in fact, purchased an old aircraft carrier (similar to type shown below) from the Ukraine -- as Taiwan recently said they would -- and that mainland China is revamping it for use by that country's air force.

China is, to no one's surprise, disputing those claims.

"We don't know where the Taiwanese authorities got their so-called intelligence," said Li Weiyi, a spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council of China.

Li also accused Taiwan of making the accusations as part of its plans to dispute upcoming discussions between Taiwan's Kuomintang Party and the Communist Party of China on cooperative efforts between the two on economic, trade, and cultural matters.

The planned exchange between the two parties is expected to increase understanding between the island and the mainland and boost economic cooperation, he added.
