MakerPlane Open Source Glass Cockpit Set To Disrupt The Avionics Industry

Low-Cost Systems Designed For The Amateur-Built Market

Building a low cost glass cockpit is now within reach for the average homebuilt aircraft builder. For less than $300 a screen with flight sensors can be installed to give most aircraft capabilities only available in systems costing many times that amount.

The MakerPlane Electronic Flight Information System (EFIS) is written in Python and called ‘pyEFIS’. It was created for use within Experimental-Amateur Built aircraft. At AirVenture 2019 the MakerPlane team of volunteers have been showcasing these low cost systems that have taken thousands of hours to create by professional software developers and avionics engineers.

The software is free to download through the MakerPlane website along with 26 other avionics plans.

The EFIS has many features only available in more expensive systems including a moving map, FAA airport database and an open CAN-BUS protocol interface to easily allow expansion and development by third parties.

MakerPlane will be offering integrated systems for sale with powder coated panels and aluminum cases for sale in early 2020.
