Army Reopens Tennessee Hangar Damaged In 1999 Tornado

Five years after it was damaged by a tornado, the Army's Aviation Support Facility #3 in Tennessee is open for business.

Congressman John Tanner (D-TN) was on hand for the rededication in Jackson last week, calling the event a milestone for Tennessee.

"I was afraid we were going to lose this (the facility)," Tanner, a 26-year National Guard veteran, said to the crowd. "This is really a red-letter day for Jackson and Madison County. We are showing the rest of the country that the National Guard is a worthy investment."

The 1999 storm "crushed up helicopters inside and destroyed helicopters outside," according to retired Col. Bob Mitchell, who was quoted in the Jackson Sun. Since the storm, the Army crews at McKellar-Sipes Airport worked out of mobile homes and sheltered their aircraft in clamshell tents.

The new facility is a 15,000 sq. ft. hangar that houses the facility's aircraft and provides a work environment for its 42 employees.
