Italian Prototype Jet Down Off Dubai Coast

Aircraft Had Participated In Dubai Air Show

A prototype Italian M-346 trainer went down last week departing from the Dubai Air Show. Both the pilot and co-pilot ejected safely, and while no life-threatening injuries were reported, the co-pilot was said to have suffered a broken leg in the accident.

Gulfnews.com reports that the airplane had taken off from Dubai Airport en route to Saudi Arabia when the pilot reported what was described as a "technical glitch." Contact with the aircraft was lost, and it went down off Deira Palm Island shortly thereafter.

The accident is under investigation by UAE officials, as well as Alenia Aermacchi, which owned the airplane. The T-100 variant of the M346 is one of the airplanes that is a potential replacement for the Air Force's T-38 Talon trainer.
