Dulles Opens New AeroTrain Underground Transport

Trains Supplement Iconic Mobile Lounges

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA) recently announced the opening of AeroTrain, the new underground airport train system at IAD.  The train will replace most of the current Mobile Lounge system that is used to transport passengers between the Main Terminal and the Midfield Concourses.

AeroTrain is billed as a quick and convenient way to transport passengers from the Main Terminal to the midfield concourses. The nearly 4-mile AeroTrain system includes four underground train stations (Main Terminal and the A, B, and C-Gates), a vehicle maintenance facility, and a passenger security screening facility built on a new mezzanine level in the Main Terminal.  AeroTrain takes less than two minutes to travel between stations.

The AeroTrain system is the centerpiece of the MWAA's capital development program. More than $3 billion has been invested in IAD improvements since 2001 with completed projects including: a new airport traffic control tower, new runway, Concourse B extension, two new parking garages, a moving walkway to Concourse B, and the expansion of the Main Terminal. Work is continuing on the expansion of the International Arrivals Building adjacent to the Main Terminal.

The Airports Authority says it continues to improve IAD to keep the region's major international gateway attractive, functional and modern while planning for future development.
