When Michael Maniatis came across the 1928 de Havilland Gipsy Moth he brought to AirVenture 2019, it was in pieces in a barn in Canada and was barely recognizable as an airplane. This year, it was one of the stars in the Vintage area, and became an award-winner.
Maniatis did a lot of research to be able to make his airplane as authentic to the original as possible. He said he was given a lot of plans for the airplane when he bought it, but while he had much of the basics, he was not provided with information of many of the small details that would make it authentic.
The Gipsy Moth took second place in the Vintage Aircraft Association Silver Age Category in the AirVenture 2019 aircraft judging.
Aero-TV talked with Maniatis about the story of the airplane and its restoration this summer at AirVenture.
