Groups Pressure FAA To Cut Jet Noise

But Make Plenty Of Noise Of Their Own

Aero-News has reported extensively on the FAA's plans for rerouting noisy commercial air traffic now flying over parts of New Jersey, Delaware and New York... offering four choices the agency hopes will reduce the amount of noise now suffered by suburbanites in each of those states.

But in trying to reduce noise over their neighborhood, one group -- the Brandywine Hundred -- hopes to make plenty of noise on its own.

"I think the best way to ensure that they aren't ignored is for us to be very vocal and to be very persistent," said Democratic US Sen. Tom Carper, whose office has been involved with the airplane-noise issue. "And we have been and will continue to be. Our [congressional] delegation isn't about to go quietly into the night on these concerns."

That being said, however, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey objects to FAA's four plans, saying they don't address the issue of delays -- and really don't do much to reduce airplane noise, for that matter.

And at least one other local government isn't happy with the plan, either. Pennsylvania's Tinicum Township borders the Philadelphia Airport, and officials there like things just the way they are. To that end, they are pressing the FAA to consider a fifth alternative that basically says... do nothing.

The Delaware County, PA council passed a similar resolution a few weeks ago, according to the Delaware News Journal.

With all that's going on, the FAA has now extended the comment period on plans to redesign airspace involving five airports -- Philly, Newark, LaGuardia, JFK and Teterboro -- for a month, until July 1st.
