FAA Skips North Platte Regional Airport For Third Straight Year

Low Passenger Numbers Preclude Airport From Receiving Federal Grants

North Platte Regional Airport (KLBF) has failed for a third straight year to reach 10,000 enplanements, which means the airport will not be eligible for about $1 million in federal grant money from the FAA.

The North Platte Telegraph reports that airport manager Mike Sharkey said there were just over 9,000 enplanements in 2011, up three percent over 2010. But that was not enough to trigger "primary airport" status for the facility, which would open the door to guaranteed federal money for airport improvements.

AIP grants pay for up to 95 percent of qualified improvement projects. Sharkey called the low number of enplanements a "sign of the times."

The airport bills its self as "America's First Lighted Airfield." There are 19 flights to Denver weekly operated by Great Lakes Airlines under codeshare agreements with United and Frontier Airlines.
