Marines Attempted Rescue Of Jordanian Pilot Downed In Syria

Muath Al-Kaseasbeh Was Captured, Executed By ISIS

U.S. Marines attempted to locate a Jordanian pilot shot down in Syria, but were unable to reach his location before he was captured by ISIS, a Marine Corps spokesman said in a briefing at the Pentagon this week.

Col. Jason Bohm said that the Tactical Recovery of Aircraft and Personnel ... or TRAP ... team was "airborne and prepared to assist with that strike. Unfortunately, as you saw on the news, when the Jordanian pilot punched out, he pretty much landed very close to a Daesh (ISIS) position and we were unable to get to him in time and identify his location ... before he was captured," Col. Bohm said.

The Marine Times reports that Bohm did not specify how far the Marine Corps' MV-22 Ospreys had flown before the rescue attempt was abandoned, or if they had penetrated Syrian airspace.

Jordanian pilot Muath Al-Kaseasbeh was burned to death in a cage by ISIS, which recorded the event in a video and released it to the world.

U.S. officials moved additional TRAP aircraft into northern Iraq in response to Al-Kaseasbeh's capture. Bohm said the move will allow the aircraft to operate on a less restrictive alert status."
