Delta Grounds MD-Series Planes To Check AD Compliance

Follows American In Re-examining Maintenance Records

Delta Air Lines followed in the footsteps of larger rival American Airlines late Wednesday, and said it, too, would ground its MD-series airliners to inspect wiring bundles.

A spokeswoman for Delta stressed the airline acted voluntarily to recheck its entire 133-plane fleet of MD-88 and MD-90 aircraft for compliance with a 2006 Airworthiness Directive, according to Reuters.

The airline expected some cancellations Thursday due to the reinspection, but did not go into details.

As ANN reported Wednesday, American cancelled over 200 flights due to checks of wiring bundles on its own fleet of older MD-82 and MD-83 airliners.

Both the Delta and American groundings are in response to a massive FAA audit program of airline maintenance records, announced earlier this month following revelations of missed fuselage inspections at Southwest Airlines.
