Aero-TV: New ‘Aera’ for Garmin – Raising the Bar for GPS Portables

Aero-TV Takes a Tour of the Revolutionary Touchscreen 'aera'

On November 2nd, 2009, Garmin International Inc. introduced their latest in innovative developments, the aera series, bridging the gap between aviation and automotive GPS devises.  With one touch, the aera models can transition from touchscreen to multi-mode.  The all-in-one GPS system will combine Garmin’s well-known operational ease of the automotive models with the extensive, yet initiative aviation systems.  The aera series will include four different models: aera 500, aera 510, aera 550, and the aera 560.

In-flight software capabilities vary by model depending on whether customers seek an entry or mid-level aviation handheld, but all units come standard with a 4.3 inch QVGA touchscreen display.  Easy-to-read icons indicate function for quick access to such items as:  map, weather, terrain, direct to, HIS/panel, active FPL, numbers, nearest, WPT info, position, XM radio, and tools.  Those who choose to purchase the aera 550 or aera 560 will also have immediate access to SafeTaxi, now including geo-referenced diagrams of over 950 U.S. airports, as well as the AOPA Airport Directory.  Pilots will be able to easily manage their aviation databases through fly.Garmin.com, where a quick synopsis will alert the owner of any necessary updates or purchases.

When a pilot is ready to transition to the road, a quick press of the airplane icon at the top of the aera screen will transition the unit into the familiar automotive interface found on Garmin zumo and nuvi models.

Those who purchase the aera 510 or the aera 560 will be able to enjoy the unit’s XM and XM WX Satellite Weather capabilities even in the automotive mode. In addition, all models will feature Bluetooth Wireless Technology that allows the unit to be paired with Bluetooth enabled phones, letting a driver receive and place phone calls directly from the aera. The new series will be on display and available for purchase for the first time at AOPA's Tampa gathering, November 5-7, 2009.
