From The Internet To The Airport: Scammers At Work

If It Sounds Too Good To Be True...

Let's say you're trying to sell your plane. You're asking $50,000 for it -- but so far, no one has bitten, and you're getting a little desperate.

Then one day, you get a call offering $55,000 -- on the condition that you send a check back to the buyer for $5,000. Would you do it?

Of course, it's a scam... but it's one that has apparently bitten quite a few pilots nationwide, according to the Aircraft Owners and Pilot's Association.

AOPA says you'll get an authentic-looking check in the mail, at which point you're expected to send off your own check for the $5,000 difference --  only to find the buyer's check is no good.

Best defense in this case, says AOPA, is to find out if the buyer's check is good before you proceed. And in any case, it may not be such a great idea to do this kind of cashback deal in the first place.
