Cessna 206 Down In Australia, Five Fatally Injured

Witnesses Say Airplane Emitted A 'Series Of Loud Bangs' On Takeoff

A Cessna 206 with five people on board went down shortly after takeoff from Caboolture Airfield north of Brisbane, Australia Saturday morning resulting in the fatal injury of all five.

The names of those on board have not been released but it is thought that they were a pilot, two skydivers, and two skydiving instructors.

SkyNews.com reports that witnesses said they heard several "loud bangs" coming from the airplane on takeoff before it veered sharply left and went down. A post-impact fire largely destroyed the airplane.

ATSB investigator Greg Madden told the Australian Associated Press that piecing together information from the wreckage would be difficult because so much of the airplane had been destroyed. "We're really relying on the physical evidence and witness statements" to determine the cause of the accident, he said.

The ATSB said its preliminary report should be released by April 23.
