AAL Flight Diverted

Storms At DFW Force Landing At Meachum

Say... this isn't DFW!

That would have been the reaction of passengers who might have slept through the hour-long delay in landing for American Airlines Flight 1496 from Long Beach, CA. The aircraft diverted from DFW to Fort Worth Meachum Field Thursday night as strong storms blanketed North Texas, north and east of DFW International.

"It was the best route for the plane," American spokesman Bill Sanez told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

Indeed, FAA spokesman John Clabes said the aircraft may have suffered from fuel depletion when its cockpit crew chose to land at Meachum. The flight, scheduled for a 1737 landing at DFW, was still in the air an hour later.

The MD Super 80 carried 133 passengers and five crew members.
