Mid-Air Collision In Switzerland Fatally Injures One Pilot

Aircraft Participating In An Air Show In Dittingen

Two airplanes flying in a formation of three at an airshow in the Swiss village of Dittingen near Basel collided in mid-air Sunday, resulting in the fatal injury of one of the pilots.

The Associated Press reports that, according to a Basel-Landschaft police spokesperson, the aircraft, both C42b GrassHoppers from Germany, touched in mid-air about 11:15 a.m. local time Sunday. Spokesman Meinrad Stoecklin said that the automatic rescue system aboard one of the aircraft did not deploy, and that pilot was fatally injured when the airplane impacted a barn near the center of the village. The other pilot bailed out with a parachute and survived. His airplane went down near a home at the edge of the town.

The third airplane in the formation was not involved in the accident, according to police.

The airshow was cancelled following the accident.
