Small New Zealand Airline Suspends Operations After Accident

Two Pilots Injured During A Training Flight

New Zealand-based Milford Sound airline suspended operations following an accident on a training flight that injured two of its pilots.

The accident occurred Friday morning. A company spokesman told TVNZ that an ELT aboard one of its Cessna aircraft activated about 0915 local time. The plane was found on its back about 3 miles south of Mt Nicholas near Queenstown. Te Anau police said it appears the plane impacted an embankment during an approach to the airport there and flipped over.

One of the people on board was taken to a local hospital reportedly suffering from multiple fractures. Milford Sound Flights CEO Jeff Staniland said the pilots were experienced, and had been employed by the airline "for some time." The airline suspended commercial operations for the weekend.

The New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority will investigate the accident.
