Gone West: Tuskegee Airman Dabney Montgomery

Marched With MLK From Selma After The War

Dabney Montgomery, a ground crewman with the Tuskegee Airmen in WWII, has Gone West at the age of 93.

The Associated Press reports that Montgomery, born in Selma, AL in 1923, was inducted into the service in 1943. He was assigned to the Tuskegee Airmen as a ground crewman in southern Italy during the war.

After the war, Montgomery became active in the Civil Rights movement, and served as a bodyguard for Dr. Martin Luther King during the march from Selma to Montgomery, AL in 1965. His wife Amelia told the AP that the shoes and tie he wore on the march will be added to the permanent collection at the new National Museum of African American History and Culture which is scheduled to open September 24 in Washington, D.C.

Montgomery had moved to New York City after attending Livingstone College in North Carolina on the GI bill. Amelia Montgomery said her husband dies of natural causes at a Manhattan hospice care facility.
