Florida Budget Could Be Good News For Daytona Beach International Airport

Money Included For Repair Of Deteriorating Taxiway

The state budget announced Tuesday by Florida Governor Rick Scott (R) could mean some needed repairs could be coming to Daytona beach International Airport (KDAB).

Included in the transportation section of the budget is a recommendation to spend $17.5 million to repair a deteriorating taxiway at the airport. That recommendation must still be approved by the state legislature.

The News-Journal of Daytona Beach reports that Daytona Beach Airport Director Rick Karl said the taxiway has been in need of repairs for several years. Without the state and federal support for these projects, we could not continue to provide a safe a and secure facility for the air-traveling public," he said.

While the taxiway is still usable, Karl said if it is not repaired soon "it will begin to fail and that becomes very expensive."

Karl estimates that the taxiway repair will cost as much as $35 million, and an FAA AIP grant would be needed to fund the remainder of the project.
