Sixty-Four Rotations, But No World Record

Pilot Falls Short Of Inverted Spin Record Attempt

It was a valiant attempt, but stunt pilot Spencer Suderman fell a bit short in his attempt to break the world-record for an inverted spin last Thursday.

Suderman, who lives in Camarillo, CA, began his attempt at FL210 at the El Centro Naval Air Facility. Radio station KXO reports that when he finally leveled off at about 1500 AGL, he had completed 64 rotations. But to break the record, he would have had to complete more than 78. That record was set by Wayne Handly, a well-known airshow performer, who according to his website set the 78-consecutive-turn record in 1989.

Suderman told ANN in an e-mail that he was unable to get to his planned starting altitude of FL250 because "that is as high as the plane would go," and that another attempt to set a world record for an inverted flat spin is definately in the works.
