FAA Investigates Close Encounter Over DFW

Jets Come Within 7/10 Of Mile Horizontally

The FAA is investigating an incident last week in which two aircraft departing Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport flew too close for comfort.

The Dallas Morning News reports that at their closest point, an American Airlines MD-83 came within 400 feet vertically and less than 7/10 of a mile horizontally of a United Express CRJ.

The pilots onboard the CRJ mistakenly turned to the southeast after departure, and towards the path of the American jet as both planes climbed over Irving, TX. An air traffic controller caught the error, and told the United jet to change course immediately.

The FAA believes the pilots onboard the CRJ may have mistakenly entered the wrong departure procedure into the flight management computer.
