EU Hints At Exemptions For Non-EU Airlines From Carbon Emission Caps

Cap-And-Trade Laws Set To Expand To All Airlines Next Year

The European Union is set to expand its cap-and-trade scheme for carbon reductions to airlines serving all EU airports next year, a move which has drawn protests from the Chinese government. But EU officials say that the non-European carriers could possibly win exemptions from the rules.

Bloomberg News reports that the cap-and-trade legislation includes the option to exclude flights from non-member nations if that country's government puts "equivalent" measures in place to cut emissions from airliners.

Exemptions would be subject to a three month review and approval by the European Parliament.

Airlines of EU members states have been subject to the Emissions Trading System (ETS) since 2008. Airlines are the second-largest sector in the scheme which encompasses some 11,000 utilities and manufacturers.
