Be Careful Of What You Practice For...
Practice, practice, practice... but
don't take it too far. Yet another simulated emergency landing
turned into the real thing this week. Whenever simulating a
powerplant emergency with reduced power settings, it behooves those
involved to carefully monitor their engine health... way
too many simulated emergencies turn into the real thing
because pilots concentrate on the practice and not the reality of
their situation--giving the engine a chance to take a hike while
your attention is elsewhere. A long idling engine, in the typical
simulated emergency approach, is asking to hiccup and quit when you
least expect it... so keep an eye on how it's doing
throughout the procedure.
