Wireless Headset Uses Bluetooth Technology

Airgyro Mach 5 Cuts The Cockpit Chord

A Utah company has developed what it calls a breakthrough in aviation headset technology. Airgyro has introduced the Mach 5 headset, which utilizes bluetooth technology to eliminate the cords. The company says is this is a first for aviation headsets.

Mach 5 Headset

The Mach 5 headset uses a small, custom-built transceiver that plugs directly into the audio and microphone ports of the aircraft. It is this innovative transceiver that eliminates the cable, or bulky modifications to the comm system, turning any aircraft comm into a wireless system instantly.

With ambient noise a concern for pilots and passengers alike, the Mach 5 provides several noise-canceling features. The removable boom mic only picks up the sound directly in front of it, where the pilot’s lips are. The headset itself has active noise canceling that is based upon an external microphone on the ear cup that picks up surrounding noise and generates an offsetting noise-killing frequency. Finally, the ear cups are larger than most, which gets them around most ears. This adds an element of passive noise canceling by reducing any sounds leaking to your ears.

The headset is based upon the highly rated noise-canceling headset from Audio-Technica. This headset suppresses 90% of the external noise (compared to about 85% for most other noise canceling headsets), and has a range of up to 30 feet. It also is compatible with Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones, allowing the user to make and receive calls hands-free.

Airgyro is offering a special introductory price for "early adopters" at least through the end of January. They sold out of their product at their booth at Sebring on the first day of the show.
