Making Way For The Jumbo

JFK Invests In A380 Infrastructure

If the giant Airbus A380 were to fly from London to New York's JFK tomorrow, it could pull up to one of only four gates on landing. Now, the Port Authority of New York/New Jersey is spending $179 million on infrastructure to make more gates available to the behemoth.

It takes a special gate to accommodate the A380. The wingspan of the 550-passenger, double-decker aircraft is 262 feet -- 50 feet wider than a Boeing 747's. That's caused problems for Airbus that range from the need for special transportation equipment to larger hangar and assembly facilities. Then there are questions among skeptics about whether existing terminals can handle the crush of a fully-loaded incoming or outgoing flight.
